Sonprayag Sangam – The Sacred Confluence of Basuki and Mandakini Rivers

Gaurikund, located at 1,982 meters, is the base point for the Kedarnath trek and holds immense religious importance. According to mythology, this is where Goddess Parvati (Gauri) meditated for years to win the love of Lord Shiva. The site is home to the Gauri Mata Temple, dedicated to Goddess Parvati, and the famous Gaurikund hot water spring, where pilgrims traditionally take a dip before beginning their trek. After breakfast, we proceed to Sonprayag, from where a shared jeep takes you to Gaurikund, the starting point of the Kedarnath trek. Devotees can either trek 22 km to Kedarnath or opt for a Kedarnath helicopter booking from Phata. The trek offers picturesque views and passes through important landmarks like Bhairavnath Temple and the Mandakini River valley. Upon reaching Kedarnath Temple, devotees can participate in the evening Aarti and experience the divine presence of Lord Shiva’s Jyotirlinga. Perched on a hilltop, the temple offers panoramic views of the Kedarnath valley and snow-capped Himalayan peaks. According to legend, Bhairavnath Ji is the guardian deity of Kedarnath Dham, protecting the temple and surrounding region, especially during the winter months when the shrine is closed. Devotees visiting Kedarnath make it a point to seek the blessings of Bhairav Baba, believing that his divine energy safeguards the entire region from natural calamities. The short trek to Bhairav Temple is rewarding, providing breathtaking vistas and a serene spiritual experience.

Bhairav Temple – The Protector of Kedarnath Dham

Bhimbali is a small yet significant rest point on the Kedarnath trek route, located about 7 km from Gaurikund. Once a thriving halt for pilgrims, Bhimbali was one of the worst-affected areas during the 2013 Uttarakhand floods, with massive landslides destroying most of the infrastructure. Today, the new trekking path passes through this area, which has been rebuilt with tea stalls, rest points, and medical aid centers for devotees. Bhimbali offers stunning views of the Mandakini River, flowing alongside the rugged mountain path. It serves as an important midway halt where trekkers can take a break, refresh themselves, and continue their journey with renewed energy.

Located near Rudraprayag, the Augustmuni Temple is dedicated to Sage Agastya, one of the most revered sages in Hindu mythology.
